Comfort Service Center Developments To Go Ahead!
We have now instructed the screen manufacturers to proceed with the CSC development program. The work is mainly involving firmware work because the hardware is already in place. Recently a Home Theatre facility has been added along with the inclusion of a Audio/Video bridge, which enables the control of A/V equipment using IR emitters or RS232. You can view the photos of the hardware by clicking the photo link on the right.

Update: The screen development work is taking longer than expected due to some technical difficulties with the analogue video inputs and intercom facilities. The Comfort development work has now been rescheduled and our new date for expected release in some time in January 2004. There are more customer comments at the bottom of this page..

Comfort Interfaces So Far..
You will no doubt be familiar with the main Comfort user interfaces, the telephone provides convenient local and remote control of Comfort, the Keypad KP01 introduced handsfree access to Comfort's voice menu and control of security, lights and appliances without needing the telephone. The KP02 introduced Infrared to allow Comfort to be controlled using the Philips Pronto touchscreen, very useful but not a 2-way device. More recently the RIO and SCS01 provided additional inputs for receiving and controlling comfort and X10 devices via Infrared and wall-switches. All these interfaces have been extremely valuable to Comfort users but we would like to move on to the next generation of interfaces which 'combine' the technologies.

There has always been a need for Comfort to have a web enabled interface with advanced features and over the last couple of years we have produced a web interface for PC (CWI) and a dedicated linux web module (CWM), these have been successfull in part but have left users wanting more. The main drawback of using a PC for home automation has been the unreliability of the Operating System and the need for the user to be quite 'technically competent'. The CWM product has dealt with the issues of reliability but has has no local video input for displaying local video images and has no local user interface unless a PC with a browser is used.

Touchscreen User Interfaces
From our dealings with customers over the years we have repeatedly been asked to produce a touchscreen /LCD type interface for Comfort as an alternative to the voice keypads. This has been largely out-of-reach due to the incredible development costs associated with such a project. As you would expect we would require it to display video, stream audio, link to the internet and do everything else that technology can provide these days, so we were unable to achieve this. Some users have linked Comfort to the 'Smart-touch' screen, 'Leopard' Screen from Applied Digital keypad and Crestron screens, all with degrees of success but none of these offer a true level of integration that is needed between Comfort and the User Interface.

Convergence
We have always believed that the web will be more and more closely involved with Home Automation and that user interfaces and their convenience will become key to how products are perceived and marketed. We have seen mobile phones communicating with home appliances, TV Set top Boxes controlling the home and accessing the web via TV menus, Infrared remotes and Wireless remotes offer control too, but none of these have 'maximised' the possibilities for a true integration of technology.

We now have an opportunity to develop a touchscreen gateway range of products which can address most of the above 'needs' and 'issues' and enhance the way we live today.

High-End Benefits
We have strived to keep Comfort in an 'affordable' price range compared to the high-end A/V brands however to implement a touchscreen we will be forced into a different price category. Despite this higher price the functionality offerred is more akin to a high-end system could in the long term save money. You would not need to buy a dedicated Audio Player in each room, a central MP3 /Video storage device on LAN would be all thats needed to serve music to any room (local amp/spkrs would be required). You would be able to use the screens as intercom and as internet phones across the world with a possibility of video 'option'. The inclusion of 'Smart Options' menu could allow the user to switch lights if they are left on in rooms where there is no activity, send an email when system is armed or alarms are triggered and record video to server, adjust the heating acc' to weather conditions from web-based data or alert via email when a share price has changed by 'x' amount. The Service Center would be able to control all the usual Comfort functions such as X10, Honeywell Smartfit, Clipsal CBUS and EIB (Instabus) as well as the Messages, Reminders and Time Programs and rudimentary programming.

Technical Information
The Comfort Service Center would reside in one of the keypads and be known as the 'Master'. It is based on a linux OS with built-in web server and LAN (10baseT or 100baseT). There needs to be one 'Master' screen (Fixed TCP/IP addr.) with connection to a network hub, one Comfort UCM01 and a Video/Camera source from Comfort Relays and 12v 3A DC supply. IP addresses of any remote cameras (traffic or other) may be entered manually into the playlist. The Hub would be ideally be connected to an ADSL /DSL or ISDN router providing the internet access to whole the network. Other screens known as clients, connect to the hub and communicate with the 'Master' via DHCP. The 15" screen version also has web browser, TV tuner built-in and a TV out. The TV out can connect to the Aerial Dist. system in the home enabling Internet and Home Control etc to be available at each TV, navigation is via an RF mouse (85' range).

The 'Master' Screen can be made as either the 6" version or the 10" screen versions. Screens are wall-mounted and required cutout of 4.75"h x 8.9"w. The unit requires 1" depth to sink into the wall and protrudes off the wall by 0.55". The OS is flash upgradeable over IP, updates and enhancements would be available over the internet. A desk-mount Oak 'pod' would be available for the 6" screen and can be equipped with a wireless internal LAN card, in which case just 12V local supply would be required.

** We will soon be offering ADSL with Static IP (essential for web serving) and full home installation inc config of all existing PC's on the Network (up to max of 5). Monthly charge for Home User at 512kbs will be £25 + VAT/month, £150 + VAT installation
. Business Packages are also available.

What would it cost?
We estimate that the 6" version would Retail at around £1500 + VAT (US$2350). The 10" version would retail Retail at around £1700 + VAT (US$2700). A lower cost 6" client with lower res screen and less memory could be available later at around £1100 + VAT (US$1750).

Do you need this solution?
the choice is yours..
Everything is in place to develop this solution and have it available within 4 or 5 months. Our investment into this would be significant and before we will consider it we need to know the general feeling from existing and potential new users. The price of the product is the main issue of course, we are quite sure the functionality is in step with the market and needs of customers. If you want to see this solution become a reality please register your interest on the above form.

Cytech Technology Pte Ltd and Comfort Home Controls

Comfort Service Center
The Comfort Service Center would combine convenient touchscreens with integrated home control, network media access, and enhanced lifestyle applications under a consistent user interface across multiple platforms, throughout the connected home. The Service Center enhances the Comfort controller providing graphical user interfaces to control lighting, security, monitoring, HVAC, and appliances in the home and from various local and remote locations. The Comfort Service Center enables all of these features on a bright, full color screen with Macromedia Flash-based graphics so homeowners can "feel" the interaction. The Service Center also adds enhancements like easy access to networked camera monitoring, digital photo screen saver, streaming music player, Internet radio, and enhanced communication services. All this on simple, reliable access platforms conveniently located throughout the home (non-Windows).

Save Time in Installation:
The Service Center has been specifically designed for ease of installation and setup. You've already programmed the control panel; now let the Service Center do the work. The Service Center master and client units receive all of the necessary information from Comfort in a virtual "plug and play" operation. Installers benefit from time savings in installation and setup while differentiating your offering and exposing the benefits of home networking. Configuration is via web browser and operating system is flash-upgradeable over the web, simplifying new feature implementations.
Flexible and Scalable Installation: The Service Center simplifies the installation of multiple devices. Just one Service Center (Master) need ever be connected to the control panel; all others can simply be placed on the home Ethernet network, as many as you want. In addition, no PC or server need be included in the system. The Service Center is powerful enough to handle all necessary processing.

Service Center Touchscreens expose Features Better than keypads and are far more convenient than PC's. Both make for poor access to control when it is supposed to be engaging, interactive and on your terms! Service Center touchscreens provide access to sophisticated home control and IP based services anywhere in the home.

Value Added Applications get partner services used more often. An elegant in-wall touchscreen will enhance the perception of a Comfort Control system, but Service Center doesn't stop there. Our proprietary applications will add value well above and beyond.
Save Money: The Comfort Service Center brings the luxury of high-end automation and control at a fraction of the cost of other systems.

The optional Music and Voice over IP application can be used to play music off of the home network or streaming content from the Internet and even becomes your home intercom system. A Service Center intercom isn't limited to just inside the home, however. The Service Center's Voice Over IP based communication system allows the touchscreen to talk to a multitude of other devices, from the touchscreen in the entryway, to the front desk/gate to a laptop downtown or a PC halfway around the world. It's all about convenience and easy access to your home systems on one elegant touch panel.

The Service Centers also come equipped with a full Camera Monitoring application. View as many cameras as you'd like, one or four at time. With just a touch, you can go to full screen, stop on particular cameras or change the delay time between camera views. Or add camera views available through the Internet to see local traffic, weather or any other IP based camera.

Digital Photo Album
Scrolling Photo Screen Saver, Auto Scale of Images, Full Screen or Preview.
Choice of Access: Local Photo Storage, Network Photo Storage.
Optional Services:Internet Photo Storage, Share photos with Family, Friends.

Camera Monitoring
Scrolling Pre-selected Camera views, Full Screen, preview or tile, Works with analog, digital or Internet-based city
cams. Screen Buttons would allow responses on Comfort to switch between local cameras using relays.

Below are Some Comments we have been receiving

- Sounds like an excellent addon. The cost is the main factor however. When you can buy a laptop for under £1k, 1500 for a 6" version seems a little expensive. I would also like the possibility of haveing the master without a screen (like CWM). There's no real reason to have a server with a screen on it when it should be accesible and programmable remotely.

- Sounds like the way foward & they look good. I think customers want something they can see & touch as most home automation stuff is out of sight working in the background. Maby a bit costly but I would hope that with enough sales costs will go down!

- Nice - but lets try and keep some continuity between these screens and the tel voice menu. Its the tel voice menu that sells Comfort for me. So lets not forget dev on the main product. Good to see you have added a margin! It would not hurt to make comfort more elite. You are obviously aware of the complexitiies which greatly enhance the possibilities for a despoke unit for the installer. I have mentioned on several occasions that the Comfort prices are too visible and customers do not want to pay for labour. Ok go ahead as always a step in the right direction.

- As an IT professional I would expect the unit to also connect to a Windows 2000 Server Domain - not just the noddy (and insecure) hub/router approach. This mean supporting user-id and password! I have a Win 2000 Server home network using DHCP, sitting behind the MS ISA firewall with a 3COM wireless lan. The 'units' should connect using a wireless lan card - why would I want to start running wires when wireless technology connects an IP device to my network instantly?

Our reply For hub security. The file system is read-only. Then you can set only a specific narrow range of IPs that can even ping the unit, plus you should have a firewall in the home, but it is tamperproof already.

- Great idea - here is another one - Can someone come up with an IP addressable external siren, then I would not have to wire Comfort to anything except the Server !! Bye Bye messy retro fit wiring. PS think about supporting TCP/IP v6. Without this people with no LAN will not be able to connect directly to the telly from the internet - IP address range too small. Otherwise make sure either the home SERVER as opposed to comfort is the gateway device.
Our reply For those who want an IP-addressable siren...easier to look for one that is serial and use our A/V Serial bridge.

PS. linking the devices to the server requires a reliable server environment, I have one as I have installed it professionally, but this should be an option as you need much know-how to keep MS Windows happy.

- I like the idea of a screen in the kitchen, possibly with bar-code scanning in-built. Also something in the lounge - probably wireless would be good too. The price is very high - but I guess it will be what it will be as we arfe all entitled to make a living.

- I have been waiting for something like this to come along. I had been planning
to do something myself, but with a fully integrated product like this I would definately buy comfort!

- yes, yes, yes, This is a great idea. Hope the price is right.

- It all looks good, a co-worker and I discuss home automation a lot, and have various ideas which we would love to implement, such as complete home lighting and following service, audio and video routing between rooms, switiching of satellite signals from any room. Those such things. Would love to trade ideas.

-They look great and the software looks aesthetically well designed. I’d be interested in them if they weren’t quite so expensive. Wall mounting is OK although you’d also need the free-standing model that the manufacturer offers for A/V room / living room etc.

- Wow, these products are just what I've been looking for over the last 6 months. I am just about to start installing cabling into my house for Home Automation/Security/AV distribution and required some small LCD panels.
As these new products will answer all of my existing requirements and provide a truly convergent product I would be very interested.

- I personally think that touch screen is an important part in a smart home system, better still if you can link it to the camera system ( able to view any part of the home from the touch screen panel ) and if it is wireless means you can bring the panel to any part of the home and still able to do everything from the panel, hope to see the product soon.

The following comments have been received from July 2002 to January 2003

- This looks fanastic. But we need to try to keep the price down, or people will find it too expensive as alternative technologies are becoming available.

- These units look like the answer solution to HA and HHA I have been looking for. The price frightens me half to death, but then when you look at linn and qed prices and consider that they are just for HHA. By far the most 'complete' product on offer.

- At last ... what we've all been wainting for. Network & cabling already installed!

- Cool stuff. Should have been available years ago! Roll it out!

- This looks fanastic. But we need to try to keep the price down, or people will find it too expensive as alternative technologies are becoming available.

- Looks very good, I'd use it more as a dedicated monitor & background music system in the 1st instance.
When I look @ the capbilities a bit more I think I'll have a few more ideas.
Very impressed with my Comfort system so far.

- Just what I have been looking for!

- These will probably be very expensive. A possible half way point would be to have a control panel with an LCD/LED display, which is standard for all alarms systems.

- I think this is a great idea and delivers at the leading edge technology wise in the market. I hope you make them, however I think it may be too costly based on your guide prices, to achieve the volume you need. I still believe an lcd keypad is required to fill out the Comfort solution which currently can't support hearing impaired people.

- Haven't bought Comfort yet, but it's on my list once I've rewired. These new controllers look great, but you must make sure they provide openness. People will want programmability - to send messages, status info etc of their own to these pads. Check out the UKHA group and the XAP work - that sort of thing. I'm definitely going to get Comfort soon, and would love to get one or two of these with it, if the price is right.

- I would suggest the new MS PC tablet format developed on MS's XP Media platform is the best way forward; the base hardware platform is ideal and, MS 'Media Centre' version of XP is their turnkey product for the digital home - why write new code when MS have a rich api set already in place?
Our reply
(As a media center, MSFT may be a good choice. As a home controller for those home not wanting that level of sophistication, appliance-like devices are better suited. Then, as we all know, nothing is that simple with MSFT in the home )

- Humans like to interact with eqipment!! I fly Sikorsky S76c+helicopters in Macau, which have the very latest interactive LCD & CRT screens & displays in the cockpit. Being able to see information on a clear display, helps you understand what your selecting. This is the only way to go for Comfort. Keep up the good work.

- I think this is an excellent idea for moving forward with your product. So far my experience for your product has been you offer a great deal of functionality for the price. If you could create this type of interface I believe that there is an excellent marketplace here in the states and could easily promote this, if it is reliable and user freindly. I will be looking for futher updates.

- Looking at about 3 years before installation, would like 3 units - one in kitchen with TV option and MP3 audio, one mobile in Lounge for MP3 and Home cinema control and a master control panel in Master bedroom for MP3. Would require easy access to Win X based server system.

- Cost is a big factor, and like the Comfort system, a modular approach to upgrading is a plus.

- Looks a fantastic Idea and is something I would certainly want on my wish list but the reality is is may remain on my wish list for some time.

- I am just about to invest in a comfort system and am looking at an initial spend of around £1000 for supplies (as I will be installing myself) although the additional functionality will be exceptional I could not justify the £1500 start and £1100 per station this solution would require.

- We are in the process of moving into a newly built house (or at least we will be in November, when it's finished!)
I am currently negotiating the installation of CAT5 cabling after reading about home automation on the NET. (I'm now hooked and I haven't even bought a single x10 unit yet!) I've looked at other manufacturers but Comfort seems to offer the best equipment. (And it's British).
The touch screens would be a very welcome addition to the Comfort range and I would certainly be interested in bolting one or two on to the system, however it does appear to be a bit pricey. Reduce the cost and sign up!

- This setup would make me switch to Comfort

- Superb developments - good luck with developments - I will be keeping a close eye on this.
